Know thy principles
September 5th, 2016
Nelson Mandela said that his strategies might change all the time but his principles never would. Through all the change in his life there were certain things that remained steadfast in order for him to weather the many storms he encountered.
The shared belief that the team is safe for interpersonal risk taking has been shown to be a key predictor in performance of teams and organisations.  Change brings about uncertainty for people and can detract from their feelings of being safe. Great leaders should be mindful of this in how they steer the ship through uncertain times. The great businesses, and people for that matter, have kept a malleability in their behaviours so as to stay ahead of the rest, but have always had a certain set of principles which have guided what they will and won’t do. This set of principles gives people something to hang their hat on, something which remains recognizable and therefore something that keeps them.
